  Electronic Publication is also known as EPUB. EPUB is an electronic book file format that enables readers to open files using reading software in our devices. You cannot open an EPUB file alone without complying applications that can be downloaded from the web, Google Play Store for Android and App Store for Apple users. Popular applications are Ebook, Nook, Kindle, Adobe Reader, Hobo and the likes. Some EPUB books are free, while others can be bought from the internet. There are a lot of digital libraries that sell them. People who are passionate in writing usually start in creating their own electronic books and upload them online. 1. Word

3. Indesign

This program is made by Adobe. Widely used by most of book designer when it comes to creating print books. Ensure to download one. Setting up File > New > Document, tick Digital Publishing from the Intent drop-down menu. Make sure that Facing Pages is not checked if you want to create a standard reflowable EPUB book. Formats Novels that are heavy text books are usually set in a reflowable EPUB format. This contains a ‘live text’. You can select, highlight and search. Font and text sizes can also be changed – this will force the lines of text to expand and break – hence, the “reflow” Magazines with images and text combine use a fixed layout. If you want to add videos and more images, use this time to prevent from image distortion. Size Get this right by choosing which size is compatible to most devices as such: laptops, tablets, smart phones. For fixed layout, you will need to set particular dimensions (in pixels) so that the pages will vary depending on the viewing device. Organize Indesign is user friendly that enables users to navigate the book with a few swipes and taps. Set up your file as Book file (File > New > Book). Chapters may be added. Just click Add Document in the Book’s drop down menu. Cover image This is the first thing that readers always see. Make sure to provide your book a nice, attractive and catchy cover to attract readers. It will be seen as thumbnails then blow up upon clicking. Ensure to have more image than the text on the cover. Text and other elements Text should be legibly visible. Edit them: Window > Type&Tables > Character/Paragraph. Images should anchor with the text. Edit and shape them with this: Edit > Copy the element , click your Type Tool (T). Position it and Edit > Paste. You can choose how you want it viewed by Object > Anchored Objects > Options and adjust it to Inline, Above Line or Custom. Exporting Finally, your book is ready. File > Export choose EPUB format. Once book file is set, Export Book to EPUB and it’s ready to go.  

4. HTML and XML

This is a lengthy process. If you plan on using this, save your HTML as MOBI or EPUB file. Usually, EPUB is XML based. Simply create XML files, collect them together and call it an EPUB. Primary steps below: Build your HTML Write in HTML with CSS for styling. Better to start with XHTML so you don’t have to convert HTML to XHTML. Separate chapters per file. Collect altogether and out in a folder. It is error prone so you have to keep tabs on your codes while working. Create a MIME type file In text editor, open a new document with this: application/epub+zip Save the file as “mimetype”, no extension needed and put the file in the folder with the rest of XHTML files. Style Sheets Create a file for the book styles: stylesheet.css And the other set of sheets: page_styles.css Files can be created with different file names as long as you can remember them. Cover image Image should be saves as JPG file with 64 KB maximum file. Choose them wisely as it will help a lot in marketing your book once you have published it. Title page Create an XHTML file: titlepage.xhtml Table of contents Create an XHTML file: toc.ncx Container XML file Create an XHTML file: container.xml Save it in a sub-directory below your HTML files. Contents list Create an XHTML file: content.opf This file includes your metadata about the book: author, publish date, genre,etc) Sub-directory: META-INF Once you have all your data save in your folder, use a zip file archive program to zip the directory. Change the extension name from .zip to .epub. Testing You may want to test your book before letting it out to public. It will be trial and error for the first try. Make sure to be patient with this. If it doesn’t display correctly, use complying software to correct problems.
