Formats

Novels that are heavy text books are usually set in a reflowable EPUB format. This contains a ‘live text’. You can select, highlight and search. Font and text sizes can also be changed – this will force the lines of text to expand and break – hence, the “reflow”

Magazines with images and text combine use a fixed layout. If you want to add videos and more images, use this time to prevent from image distortion.

Size

Get this right by choosing which size is compatible to most devices as such: laptops, tablets, smart phones. For fixed layout, you will need to set particular dimensions (in pixels) so that the pages will vary depending on the viewing device.

Organize

Indesign is user friendly that enables users to navigate the book with a few swipes and taps. Set up your file as Book file (File > New > Book).
Chapters may be added. Just click Add Document in the Book’s drop down menu.

Cover image

This is the first thing that readers always see. Make sure to provide your book a nice, attractive and catchy cover to attract readers. It will be seen as thumbnails then blow up upon clicking. Ensure to have more image than the text on the cover.

Text and other elements

Text should be legibly visible. Edit them: Window > Type&Tables > Character/Paragraph.

Images should anchor with the text. Edit and shape them with this: Edit > Copy the element , click your Type Tool (T). Position it and Edit > Paste. You can choose how you want it viewed by Object > Anchored Objects > Options and adjust it to Inline, Above Line or Custom.

Exporting

Finally, your book is ready. File > Export choose EPUB format. Once book file is set, Export Book to EPUB and it’s ready to go.

4. HTML and XML

This is a lengthy process. If you plan on using this, save your HTML as MOBI or EPUB file. Usually, EPUB is XML based. Simply create XML files, collect them together and call it an EPUB. Primary steps below:

Build your HTML

Write in HTML with CSS for styling. Better to start with XHTML so you don’t have to convert HTML to XHTML. Separate chapters per file. Collect altogether and out in a folder. It is error prone so you have to keep tabs on your codes while working.

Create a MIME type file

In text editor, open a new document with this: application/epub+zip
Save the file as “mimetype”, no extension needed and put the file in the folder with the rest of XHTML files.

Style Sheets

Create a file for the book styles: stylesheet.css
And the other set of sheets: page_styles.css
Files can be created with different file names as long as you can remember them.

Cover image

Image should be saves as JPG file with 64 KB maximum file. Choose them wisely as it will help a lot in marketing your book once you have published it.

Title page

Create an XHTML file: titlepage.xhtml

Table of contents

Create an XHTML file: toc.ncx

Container XML file

Create an XHTML file: container.xml
Save it in a sub-directory below your HTML files.

Contents list

Create an XHTML file: content.opf
This file includes your metadata about the book: author, publish date, genre, etc)
Sub-directory: META-INF
Once you have all your data save in your folder, use a zip file archive program to zip the directory. Change the extension name from .zip to .epub.

Testing

You may want to test your book before letting it out to public. It will be trial and error for the first try. Make sure to be patient with this. If it doesn’t display correctly, use complying software to correct problems.
